Ministry Clarifies Situation of Al Madinah School in Brikama

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) Thursday issued a public notice dated 7th August 2025, clarifying the on-going tensed situation of Al Madinah Basic Cycle School, a private institution located in Brikama.

According to the ministry, the school experienced serious operational difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, particularly in fulfilling salary obligations for its teaching staff. Upon learning of these challenges, MoBSE engaged with the school’s proprietors in a bid to protect the welfare and academic progression of the students.

The ministry confirmed that a mutual agreement was made allowing students already enrolled at the school to complete key academic levels specifically Grades 6 and 9 so they could transition smoothly to the next phase of their education with minimal disruption. To facilitate this, MoBSE deployed qualified teaching staff to support learning during the transitional period.

Going by the public notice, the Ministry acknowledged receiving reports of access restrictions affecting on-going summer classes, as well as tensions between the school proprietor and stakeholders. However, MoBSE clarified that the proprietor has not formally indicated any intention to hand over or permanently transfer management of the school to the government.

“While the proprietor has not indicated any plans to maintain or formally hand over the school to the government, the Ministry remains committed to ensuring that students’ education is not interrupted,” the statement read.

MoBSE reiterated its willingness to continue being open and respectful dialogue with the proprietor to ensure a smooth transition and uphold students’ right to uninterrupted learning. The Ministry also warns that if the proprietor refuses to cooperate or continues to obstruct student access, it will be left with no choice but to take appropriate steps to safeguard the education and safety of the students.

To conclude, the Ministry appealed to all parties involved to prioritize the best interests of the students and the wider community by fostering mutual respect and working together towards a peaceful resolution.

“We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring quality education for every child and thank the public for its understanding and support during this process,” the Ministry stated.
