Modou Turo Darboe Announces Political Ambitions for 2026, Rules out Presidential Bid

Africa-Press – Gambia. Modou Turo Darboe, renowned philanthropist and founder of the Vision Development Foundation, has announced his intention to enter active politics in 2026, though he emphasized that he has no desire to run for president.

Speaking during a ceremony in the Upper River Region, where he was honored as the “honorary father” by 43 village communities in recognition of his sustained contributions to local development, Darboe made his political aspirations clear.

“In 2026, I will be involved in politics, but I don’t want to be president. I have no intention of becoming one,” Darboe stated. “Whether it’s with the UDP, NPP, APRC, GDC, or any other party, I will be involved in politics one way or another.”

Darboe, who has long been known for his charitable efforts across The Gambia, expressed his dissatisfaction with the current political culture, particularly criticizing opportunistic leadership and broken promises.

“When I enter politics, those who support me will eventually smile,” he said. “I will not be the kind of politician who benefits from others’ labor while they are left behind. That style of politics must end in this country.”

He further condemned the pattern of political betrayal, highlighting how some individuals rise to power and wealth while ignoring those who supported them along the way.

“You share struggles with people, then they get into positions and drive past you in Pajeros,” he remarked. “When they need your vote, they come with lofty promises. But ask them, ‘We used to drink attaya together — now you drive Prados and build mansions. Where did the money come from?’ It’s your money.”

Darboe also urged Gambians to reject tribal divisions and political manipulation.

“We are all equal—Fulas, Jolas, Mandinkas, and every other tribe,” he said. “Be cautious of politicians who try to divide you. If they tell the Fulas that Mandinkas don’t like them, it’s a lie. If they say one tribe is against another, that too is a lie.”

Although he emphasized that he is not yet a politician, Darboe reiterated that he will officially enter the political arena next year.

“It is time to speak the truth. If you’re not careful, they will use you for their interests, and once they get what they want, you’ll be left behind. Don’t accept that.”

As part of the celebration, Darboe donated over one million Dalasis to the communities that honored him, underscoring his continued commitment to grassroots development in the Upper River Region and across the country.
