Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology and stakeholders Wednesday held the fifth Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) agenda roadmap validation meeting.

Held at the higher education ministry office in Bijilo, the validation meeting entails revising of the plan of action, discuss the possible paths to revise the TVET levy and agree on the approach.

The roadmap outline plans for greater co-ordination of TVET across ministries and government agencies in order to create co-ordination across government and avoid unnecessary duplication.

It provides a solid foundation to the government for the development of its future TVET policy. The development and implementation of the roadmap is being led by MoHERST, based on the advice and guidance of the recently established TVET committee in March.

Permanent Secretary, Abdoulie T.B Jallow said knowledge and skill acquisition are key for everyone, saying the national TVET needs to have a coordinated approach to all its activities.  “We don’t want a certificated TVET programme without the hands of skills. What we need is an apprenticeship policy that would serve the TVET policy.”

Raimund Moser, representative of the International Trade Centre (ITC) said the aim of the project proposal is to assist companies in upgrading their existing employee skills to track fast changing technology and innovation.

Mr. Moser said the training will provide newly recruited employees to improve their skills to meet companies’ needs.

He said the proposal is part of MoHERST’s policy to expand the reach of technical and vocational education and training across The Gambia by establishing new skills training centres in each region.

Rebecca Simms, programme manager of United Nations Capital Development Fund  said the logic for the project are in complementary results areas such that improved access to finance and skills development programme
