After the initial Bambo-1 well reached a depth of 3,216 m (10,551 ft), FAR and partner Petronas authorized drilling of the side-track to a depth of 3,317 m (10,882 ft) MDBRT, followed by wireline logging.

Drilling and logging data from both the main well and the side-track well indicates oil shows in various target intervals, which according to FAR confirms a prolific oil source in the area.

However, interpretation of cuttings and wireline logs indicates that the zones have been charged with oil in poor-quality reservoirs and in traps that may have been breached, leaving behind residual oils in the reservoirs.

The side-track also intersected oil shows in the Soloo Deep units that were not evident in the previous well or other wells nearby. These shows were prevalent over several hundred meters, suggesting access to the prolific oil-generative kitchen, so there may be other exploration opportunities elsewhere in the company’s offshore A2 and A5 blocks.

P&A operations are under way.

Cath Norman, FAR’s managing director, said: “The project has provided significant geological information, including new play types, that reaffirms the potential of further hydrocarbon prospects in the A2 and A5 blocks…

“The drilling conditions for the Bambo-1 well presented some technical challenges, but we completed the well and the side-track operations safely and within our amended budget…

“FAR looks forward to working with its co-venturer Petronas and the government of The Gambia on the next steps in realizing the exploration potential in country.”

Bambo-1 fulfils the minimum work obligation for the initial exploration periods for both licenses.
