Martin Lewis has this week moved to share the reasons you could end up forking out higher than the cap priceThe energy price cap is rising in April of this year – and some households are being left confused by their energy bills costing MORE than the price cap. The price cap is skyrocketing by over £600 in April.
And it will be followed by a second rise this year, in October, according to warnings from consumer experts. Martin Lewis has this week moved to share the reasons you could end up forking out higher than the cap price. The Money Saving Expert, who will be hosting a Cost of Living Crisis special of his ITV Martin Lewis Money Show on Tuesday, fielded questions on ITV This Morning. He confirmed it is not a cap on bill prices overall, but on the unit price. The MSE founder explained to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: “What you hear talked about is the typical usage of what someone would pay, but if you use more, you pay more, if you use less you pay less. There is no absolute cap on the total amount of energy that you can pay for. If you have a huge house and you’re using enormous amounts you can pay £10,000 or £20,000 a year.
“It’s a cap on the unit cost, and it actually varies regionally and the numbers that you will have heard [on the price cap], are just for someone on typical usage. It’s the unit rates that are going up and [the price cap] is just an easy way to explain it.
