Africa-Press – Gambia. Almamy Gibba, the National Assembly Member (NAM) for Foni Kansala, has clarified that the recent police summons of Imam Abdul Kareem Kuyateh was not intended to charge, prosecute, or take him to court, but rather to hear his side of a complaint lodged against him.
Speaking in an exclusive interview , NAM Gibba—who was among the delegation that accompanied the imam to the Police Headquarters in Banjul—explained that the engagement was also meant to ensure the imam’s safety if necessary.
“The police want to hear his side of the story about the complaints lodged against him and also to offer him protection if needed,” NAM Gibba stated.
According to Gibba, discussions during the meeting focused on promoting peace, fostering unity, and upholding the law. He stressed that Imam Kuyateh was neither forced nor harassed. “He was not forced or harassed.” he said.
The NAM further disclosed that the imam presented the police with the full recording of his 15th August sermon, noting that only a short excerpt is currently circulating online.
“Religion is incumbent upon anyone, and we will not compromise it with anyone. We will preach the truth of the religion, and any scholar and imam that stood on that, we are with you,” Hon. Gibba affirmed.
However, he cautioned, “But anybody who brought something that is associated with Allah, we are not in support of that.”
