Africa-Press – Gambia. Sulayman Saho, National Assembly Member for Central Badibou and a contender for the United Democratic Party (UDP) flagbearer position, has pledged to promote unity and prioritize youth empowerment if selected to lead the party in the 2026 presidential elections.

Speaking after his vetting interview with the UDP selection committee, Saho described the party as one rooted in service to the people and committed to upholding democracy, the rule of law, and good governance.

“UDP is a party that is a party of the poor people. It’s a party that is ready to serve this country. It’s a party that has struggled since time immemorial to ensure that there is a rule of law and good governance in this country.

“And I believe I will be able to lead this party into that path. I believe I can be able to make sure that the youth are empowered in this country. I believe I can help women to be involved in decision-making in this country,” he said.

Saho expressed gratitude to party officials, supporters, and his family for their encouragement throughout the application process, calling it a testament to the UDP’s internal democratic values.

He stressed the importance of national unity beyond ethnic lines, urging Gambians to see themselves as one people working toward collective development, with particular emphasis on rural advancement.

“I have a vision, which is to unite Gambia. Whether you are a Wollof, Mandinka, Jola, or Bambara, we should see ourselves as one people who champion development; rural development should be a priority,” he said.

Highlighting the challenges facing the country, Saho pointed to the decline of the agricultural sector, rising food insecurity, a struggling economy, and the persistent issue of youth migration.

“The young people are dying in the sea. I believe that with the UDP government, we can make a change in this country,” he declared.

If elected, Saho said he would strengthen local governance, promote Gambian culture, and enhance international relations. He underscored the need for autonomy and accountability in local government institutions, free from corruption and misuse of resources.

“Local governments must be independent and autonomous but without corruption or misuse of funds,” He Said.

On internal party dynamics, Saho emphasized reconciliation and collective purpose, pledging to unite all aspirants after the selection process.

“After this struggle, if I’m chosen as the flagbearer, I will bring all candidates together to see ourselves as one political party that is ready to salvage this country,” he affirmed.
