NAO Holds Consultation on Proposed Amendment Act of 2015

Africa-Press – Gambia. The National Audit Office (NAO) on Wednesday held a consultation workshop with multiple stakeholders at Bakadaji Hotel in Kololi, and participants discussed and reviewed the proposed amendment of the 2015 NAO Act which was enacted by the government of former President Yahya Jammeh and the National Assembly.

Pa Manjange Ndow, Deputy Director 1 of NAO, said that the institution plays a key role in ensuring accountability and transparency.

“The independence and operating capacity of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) are important foundations for providing fiscal oversight through providing credible and timely audit reports to the respective stakeholders”, he noted.

He highlighted that the current NAO Act 2015 was enacted by the National Assembly in November 2015 and it gave NAO its autonomous status as a public institution.

“Whilst appreciating this great achievement which led to the significant evolution of the Office over the years, there is the need to revisit the said Act to align it with key developments within the audit environment both at our national level but also at the global level. Alignment of the legal framework with best practices and changing environments ensures continuous relevance and efficiency in service delivery”, he further elaborated.

“Our work is not a very popular one but we hope through such interactive forums and increased public sensitization, we will all appreciate the importance of the NAO in the accountability cycle of our governance system”, Mr. Ndowpointed out.

He highlighted that the work of the NAO is aimed at adding value and benefits to the lives of the citizens through the implementation of their constitutional mandate and all efforts to strengthen the office are geared towards that strategic goal.
