Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia’s National Assembly on Friday officially concluded its Second Ordinary Session of the 2025 legislative calendar, wrapping up four weeks of intensive legislative and oversight work.
Presiding over the final sitting, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, commended the efforts and dedication of lawmakers throughout the session.
“Honourable Members, today’s sitting marks the end of this Ordinary Session, thus the second Ordinary Session of the Assembly in the 2025 legislative year. This was precisely a four-week ordinary session with lots of businesses,” the Speaker stated.
Among the session’s highlights was the tabling of the Constitution Promulgation Bill 2024, along with a number of Private Member Bills. The Assembly also deliberated on various key legislative instruments, motions, and reports aimed at addressing national priorities.
“The session also witnessed the tabling of the Constitution Promulgation Bill, Private Member Bill, and legislative processes of critical bills, including other important motions and reports,” he said.
He noted that the Assembly confronted several of the country’s most pressing issues, including economic hardship, environmental threats, and matters of social justice.
“Honourable Members, during this session, we have also sought to address the pressing concerns of our time, from economic challenges to environmental crises, from social justice issues to the safeguarding of our liberties. We have seen the power of the democratic process in action where ideas are tested, refined, and sometimes transformed through the crucible of debate and deliberation. However, Honourable Members, as has always been said, the business of the Plenary Assembly can never be exhausted,” the Speaker said.
He reminded members that the work of the legislature is ongoing and cannot be exhausted within a single session. “As we adjourn, let us carry forward the lessons learned, the bonds forged, and the spirit of cooperation that defines our democratic institution. Together we can build a brighter future for everybody,” he concluded.
The motion for adjournment was formally moved by the Majority Leader and Member for Kantora, Hon. Billay G. Tunkara, who invoked Section 98(1)(b) of the Constitution and Standing Orders 13(5) and 54(1) of the 2019 Revised Standing Orders.
“Honourable Speaker, I beg to move the motion for the adjournment of this Assembly sine-a-die, invoking Section 98(1)(b) of the Constitution and Orders 13(5) and 54(1) of the 2019 Revised Standing Orders,” Hon. Tunkara declared.
