Africa-Press – Gambia. The National Assembly on Wednesday wrapped up its fourth ordinary session of the 2025 legislative year, concluding seven weeks of deliberations that centered on the 2026 national budget, the review of bills and motions, committee reports, and ministerial questioning.
The Speaker described the sitting—said to be among the lengthiest and busiest of the year—as significant for both the volume and weight of parliamentary business.
“This was precisely a seven-week ordinary session with lots of businesses, prominent among which was the consideration and approval of the estimates of revenue and expenditure of the Republic of The Gambia for the fiscal year 2026 with thorough scrutiny; the session also witnessed first and second readings of some important bills by honorable ministers and members for consideration by this Assembly, including other important motions and reports,” he said.
As lawmakers adjourned, the Speaker urged members to reflect on the institution’s work and the responsibilities that lie ahead, underscoring that legislative duties continue beyond the chamber.
“Let us continue to engage with our constituents, seek their feedback, and work collaboratively across party lines for the greater good of our nation,” he said. “Finally, Honourable members, I want to express my appreciation for your commitment, passion, and dedication to the service of our country.”
In moving the motion to adjourn sine die, the Deputy Majority Leader, Abdoulie Ceesay, who represents Old Yundum, recounted the legislature’s activities between late October and mid-December. During that period, he said, lawmakers scrutinized and approved the national budget, passed bills, adopted committee reports, and posed oral questions to cabinet ministers as part of their oversight duties.
Ministers from multiple sectors appeared before the Assembly to address questions linked to their portfolios, while standing and select committees presented reports that were debated and adopted. Mr. Ceesay noted that lawmakers also approved key motions related to public finance, anti-corruption oversight, and investigations into asset disposals.
He emphasized that the Assembly remains committed to accountability and effective oversight despite the demands of the legislative year. With elections approaching, he said, members are expected to continue engaging responsibly and upholding their duties to the public.
