Africa-Press – Gambia. The National Assembly has officially concluded its Third Ordinary Session of the 2025 legislative year, wrapping up a period marked by robust legislative activity, oversight functions, and stakeholder engagement.
Over the course of the session, Assembly members approved the records of proceedings, conducted interactive question-and-answer sessions with cabinet ministers, and reviewed committee reports on critical issues, including petroleum products, state-owned enterprises, and the operations of foreign missions.
Several bills were deliberated and passed, notably the Elections Bill 2022–2025, designed to strengthen electoral transparency, and the Judicial Officers’ Conditions of Service Bill 2024, aimed at enhancing the independence and remuneration of the judiciary.
Honorable Omar Darboe, Majority Chief Whip, moved the motion to adjourn the session sine die and used the opportunity to address the tragic death of citizen Omar Badjie at the hands of police. Hon. Darboe called for a transparent and independent investigation to ensure accountability and justice.
“Honorable Speaker, Honorable Members, it is with deep sorrow that I equally wish to remark on the alleged tragedy of a citizen, Omar Badjie, at the hands of the police. This incident is not only a profound loss to the bereaved family, but it also strikes at the very heart of our collective commitment to justice, accountability, and protection,” he stated.
Hon. Darboe extended condolences to the family of Omar Badjie and emphasized the Assembly’s duty to exercise strong oversight.
“We must insist on a transparent, thorough, and independent investigation into this incident, with accountability for any wrongdoing, to restore public confidence in our law enforcement institutions. This tragedy is pending our resolve to pursue reforms that guarantee professionalism, respect for human rights, and a higher standard of conduct within our security services, so that never again will we put a citizen’s face in such a circumstance,” he added.
He further urged citizens to remain patient and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to addressing public concerns and upholding accountability in governance.
The session concluded with the Speaker extending appreciation to Members of the Assembly, staff, and media for their support and contributions throughout the legislative cycle.
