Nominated Nam Fatou K Jawara Criticizes Jammeh Return

Africa-Press – Gambia. Fatou K. Jawara, nominated member of the National Assembly, delivered a sharp rebuke on Monday to former President Yahya Jammeh, dismissing his reported plan to return from exile as a threat to the country’s hard-won democracy.

Speaking during a parliamentary debate on the matter, Jawara condemned Jammeh’s legacy, describing his two-decade rule as a “brutal dictatorship” that left deep scars on Gambian society.

“I don’t think I will stand here today to waste my words on an exiled, brutal dictator,” she said. “I don’t think I need to explain to any Gambian what has already been documented. We don’t need to search for it or keep speaking about it.”

Jawara accused individuals close to the former president of misleading residents of Foni—Jammeh’s political stronghold—by portraying his return as both feasible and legitimate.

“Jammeh has been dreaming since 2020 or 2021,” she said. “Let me just ask: Who helped him leave, and who is stopping him from coming back? If he is man enough, let him come. We disowned the tyrant and sent him out of this country. He cannot be a leader here anymore.”

Intensifying her criticism, Jawara declared that Jammeh was “not even fit to lead a household,” adding that “the only space Jammeh has now is in the bush, chatting with monkeys and goats.”

She warned that the democratic gains Gambians have enjoyed since Jammeh’s ouster in 2017 must not be jeopardized by efforts to restore him to political relevance. “The democracy that the Gambians are enjoying today, you cannot spoil it,” she said, insisting that “small groups trying to destabilize the country will not succeed.”
