Africa-Press – Gambia. North Star FC became the first team from the provincial Gambia promotion playoffs to book their place in the GFF Second Division after a last-gasp 2-1 defeat of Niani FC in a closely contested match played at the Live Your Dreams Academy Field in Basori today.
North Star FC opened the scoring through an Ebrima Jammeh own goal in the 41st minute, before captain Almameh Jorbateh equalised with a stunning 20-yard free-kick a minute into the second half to restore parity. However, Modou Lamin Ceesay had the final say, scoring a stoppage-time penalty following a handball in the Niani box.
North Star FC is on three points and have grabbed one of the two places available for promotion with a match to spare. Meanwhile, Niani FC will now have to wait for the outcome of Friday’s game between North Star FC and AJ Soccer FC at the same venue to know their fate. AJ Soccer only need to avoid defeat to join North Star in the Second Division, while Niani will be hoping that North Star can inflict a heavy defeat on AJ to stand any chance of qualification.
