Africa-Press – Gambia. Seedy Sheriff Ceesay, Administrative Secretary of The Gambia’s National People’s Party (NPP), has underscored the need for African political parties to embrace transparency, inclusivity, and active citizen participation in governance.
Speaking at the African Political Parties Summit in Ghana, Ceesay noted that citizens—particularly young people—are increasingly demanding openness, engagement, and tangible results from their leaders. He urged political parties across the continent to adapt to the new political landscape by implementing bold reforms that make them more responsive, inclusive, and relevant amid rapid social and economic change.
“Our citizens are no longer satisfied with business as usual. They want leaders who listen, who adapt, and who deliver,” he said. “Let us commit to building political parties that are not just tools for winning elections, but platforms for building a better Africa together.”
Highlighting the NPP’s own initiatives under President Adama Barrow’s leadership, Ceesay explained that the party is modernizing its structures, expanding youth and women’s participation, and creating more avenues for public input. He said these efforts aim to cultivate a political culture rooted in unity, service, and national development.
Ceesay also stressed that political parties must prioritize the public good through responsiveness to societal changes, ethical use of technology, genuine youth leadership opportunities, strong values, and cross-border cooperation.
In addition, he extended condolences on behalf of President Barrow, the NPP, and the people of The Gambia to Ghana’s government and citizens following the recent helicopter crash that claimed the lives of several senior Ghanaian officials.
The three-day African Political Parties Summit serves as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing to strengthen democratic governance and foster political cooperation across the continent.
