Africa-Press – Gambia. The National Sports Council (NSC) has issued a statement providing clarity on the ongoing rehabilitation of the National Independence Stadium’s hybrid pitch, addressing recent public speculation about the project.

According to the NSC, the current pitch will not be replaced but rather upgraded. The council confirmed that a foreign company has been engaged under a subcontracting arrangement to support the process in line with national procurement regulations.

The contracted company’s responsibilities include:

Supplying specialized pitch maintenance equipment not available locally

Rehabilitating the existing surface, including treatment of fungal infections and correction of uneven areas

Training Gambian staff on proper maintenance techniques and the use of newly supplied equipment

The NSC further disclosed that the contractor will remain in The Gambia for two months after completing the initial work to ensure effective knowledge transfer and capacity building among local staff.

“The contractor, upon completing the above primary assignment, will remain in The Gambia for two months to ensure full knowledge transfer and capacity building among local staff,” the NSC stated.

Acknowledging previous challenges in pitch maintenance, the council assured the public that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has now introduced stricter measures to avoid a recurrence. These measures include prioritizing the procurement of essential equipment and investing in continuous staff training to guarantee long-term sustainability without overreliance on external expertise.
