Africa-Press – Gambia. The National Unity Party on Wednesday evening announced the appointment of Dr Lamin J Darbo as party leader, secretary general, and standard bearer, effective 31st October.

It stated that Dr Darbo’s appointment underscores the party’s commitment to solidifying its vision, principles and philosophy which envisage a sustained socio-economic and political transformational change in The Gambia.

A press statement issued by the party’s communication team noted:

“Dr J Darbo’s leadership acumen is rooted in empathy, courage, visionary inspiration, transparency and accountability, a testament to our sheer conviction that he shall provide strategic direction, effective and efficient governance system, robust representation of our party’s values, principles, and philosophy.

“NUP is a people’s movement with a unique political brand that distinguishes our party from conventional political parties in The Gambia. Our founding philosophy is rooted in building a merit-based government driven by national interest, not party affiliation.

“From inception, our founding fathers adopted a resolution that none of them would vie for positions of presidential candidate (standard bearer / flag bearer). This principle underscores their unwavering commitment to creating a people-driven movement— one that anchors on the principles of democracy, equality, justice, and the promotion of social cohesion in order to foster and maintain national unity, and promote a sense of belonging to ordinary Gambians rather than its original benefactors.

“The NUP also enshrined term limits in its governance structure: no Party Leader shall serve more than two terms — whether in government or opposition. This ensures leadership renewal, accountability, and sustained innovation in the service of The Gambia.

“While we reaffirm our commitment to national unification, socio-economic and political freedom, we wish to implore all and sundry to join us in this sacred mission to put The Gambia on a pedestal of hope.”
