Africa-Press – Gambia. The newly appointed Paramount Chief (Seyfo,) Alhagi Yaya Jarjusey, has called for greater emphasis on dialogue and community-based conflict resolution, saying the court system alone cannot address the root causes of disputes in Gambian society.

In an interview, the Chief of Jarra West District in the Lower River Region said sustainable peace can only be achieved when communities take ownership of resolving their differences through understanding and mutual respect.

“Courts alone cannot heal communities,” Jarjusey said, adding that dialogue remains the most effective means of resolving conflicts and ensuring lasting peace.

His remarks come as The Gambia continues efforts to strengthen national unity amid concerns over tribalism and marginalization.

Jarjusey said traditional leaders have a critical role to play in bridging divisions and promoting social cohesion at the grassroots level.

He urged chiefs across the country to act as ambassadors of peace, noting that their influence places them in a unique position to mediate disputes before they escalate.

“As chiefs, we must lead by example and encourage our people to settle their differences peacefully,” he said, stressing that peace and stability are essential for national development.

The Paramount Seyfo also expressed appreciation to President Adama Barrow for the trust and confidence reposed in him following his appointment, which took effect on 1 January 2026.

He pledged to serve in the best interest of the country and uphold the values of unity and fairness.

Widely regarded as an experienced traditional leader, his elevation to Paramount Seyfo is seen as recognition of his longstanding service.

Jarjusey reaffirmed his commitment to fostering peace through dialogue, emphasizing that unity remains the cornerstone of The Gambia’s stability and future progress.
