Africa-Press – Gambia. As a consequence, due to Gambia’s 2024 Draft Constitution by the National Assembly (NA) for certain political reasons, PASTEF The Gambia has called for a Broad-Based National Coalition to rally around an Independent Presidential Candidate in a bid to change the questionable political narrative of one political party dominating the political arena of the country.
PASTEF The Gambia further advances that rejecting the 2024 draft constitution has deprived citizens of enjoying true democracy and meaningful political reforms, and that it requires a broad-based national coalition as part of salvaging the current political scenario in the country.
Mr. Sidibeh, Public Relations Officer (PRO) and Communications Officer for PASTEF The Gambia, said, “The rejection of the 2024 draft constitution has eliminated the possibility of a second-round voting system that would have encouraged coalition-building under the leadership of the runner-up candidate.” he expressed dismay.
PRO Sidibeh attributed the non-enactment of the draft constitution to partisan politics and interests instead of national interest, “by discarding the 2024 Draft Constitution, they deliberately set aside the first and only framework that introduced presidential term limit and a 50%+1 majority system, including fundamental principles of democratic governance,” he insisted.
The 2024 Draft Constitution should have replaced the 1997 Constitution, providing a solid foundation for political accountability and fair competition. PASTEF The Gambia, however, claimed to be among the few political movements that were actively advocating for its adoption with the conviction that it would offer a more democratic and inclusive vision for the country’s future.
Mr. Sidibeh stressed that the rejection has given the green light to The Gambia to continue operating under the 1997 Constitution, wherein a simple majority determines victory, making it extremely cumbersome for an opposition political party to defeat the incumbent in the ballot box.
