PASTEF Urges Government to Drop Charges against Touray

Africa-Press – Gambia. PASTEF The Gambia has urged the government to ensure fairness and avoid what it describes as “selective justice” in the case of human rights advocate Borry Touray, whose recent charges have sparked political debate.

In a statement issued on Friday, 5 December 2025, the movement called on state institutions — particularly the Gambia Police Force — to operate independently and free from political influence. It said the handling of Mr. Touray’s case raises serious questions about impartiality within the justice system.

PASTEF argued that Mr. Touray’s long-standing record in human rights work should have been considered before levelling charges against him.

“A caution would have been sufficient, and he stands ready to clarify or apologize if his comments were misunderstood,” the statement read.

The movement also voiced concern over what it described as escalating political hostility and inflammatory rhetoric, especially on social media. It urged political parties, leaders, and supporters — particularly within the main opposition — to exercise restraint and prioritize national peace.

“The Gambia belongs to every citizen, and our shared future depends on preserving peace, justice, and inclusive development,” PASTEF noted, warning that these values cannot flourish amid tension or selective enforcement of the law.

As the country approaches future elections, the group called on all stakeholders to address political disagreements through dialogue and democratic processes. It also appealed directly to the Inspector General of Police to drop the charges against Mr. Touray, “and allow the nation to move forward.”

PASTEF reaffirmed its commitment to peace, justice, and democratic governance, stressing that national stability depends on fairness from both institutions and political actors.
