Africa-Press – Gambia. Saikou Sawo, flagbearer of the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP), has urged party militants, supporters, and sympathisers to uphold decency and civility in political discourse.

Addressing delegates at the PPP Regional Congress on Sunday at Kerr Njaga Choi, North Bank Region (NBR), he called on members to respect democratic norms, promote non-violent and inclusive engagement, and reject bullying, scapegoating, and authoritarian tendencies.

“We don’t need to fight, insult, or quarrel with anyone,” he said. “Let us protect the party’s ethical standards, respect, integrity, and honesty to uphold the dignity of our founding fathers.”

He further appealed to Gambians to play an active role in national recovery, noting that persistent unemployment has driven many young people to risk their lives through irregular migration.

Also, he noted that the country’s abundant resources should be harnessed to create opportunities for citizens, one of the reasons that change is both necessary and inevitable.

Also speaking at the congress, PPP National President Mbemba Nanko urged party militants to intensify efforts to spread the party’s message of change nationwide.

He called for a revival of the party’s long-standing slogan, “the voice of the people is the voice of God,” stressing the importance of faithfully representing the will of the electorate.

PPP Vice President Neneh Cheyassin Kebe echoed similar sentiments, urging women to resist voter inducement tactics often used by incumbents.

She argued that funds used for such practices ultimately come from taxpayers.

Meanwhile, Omar Choi, the newly elected PPP Chairperson for the North Bank Region, reaffirmed the party leadership’s commitment to protecting the interests of the less privileged, improving living standards, and defending citizens’ rights.
