The meeting began with a summary of the report on the sessions of the National Economic Council of 2023, presented by Mr. Alieu Loum, cabinet director in charge of the Implementation of Strategic Policy at the Ministry of Civil Service.

During the meeting, President Adama Barrow took note of the updates made by key players in the economy and provided guidance on general policy issues. One of the main issues discussed was the impact of currencies on businesses that need to import essential goods. Currencies are essential for trade and other transactions outside the country. It was also reported that the exchange rate was virtually on par with the alternative market rate.

The president tasked the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank to conduct a thorough search for possible alternatives to ease the burden, as the country is currently facing a double-digit inflation rate of 16.2 percent.

Furthermore, the Central Bank said that member countries have not met the criteria for a single currency for the West African Monetary Zone.
