Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow on Saturday presided over the official handing over of 180 tractors to Gambian farmers at the State House in Banjul, a move aimed at boosting the country’s agricultural sector.
In his address, President Barrow underscored the importance of mechanized farming, describing the initiative as a “critical milestone” in government efforts to modernize agriculture. He said the tractors were procured to ease the labor burden of farmers and enhance efficiency in farming nationwide.
“We want to see a modernized agricultural sector in The Gambia. These tractors will not only reduce manual labor but also promote productivity across the country,” President Barrow stated, while urging farmers to take good care of the equipment.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Muhammad Majang, Board Chairperson of Yonna Financial Bureau, reaffirmed the bureau’s commitment to working with government and other partners to support agricultural development. He noted that the initiative would help promote sustainable farming practices and increase productivity.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Alaji Ceesay expressed gratitude to the government for the tractors, describing them as “vital tools” for modern farming. He stressed that the tractors would reduce labour costs and improve efficiency in ploughing, tilling, planting, and weeding, while also being useful in construction, landscaping, and material handling.
Mr. Ceesay added that the handing over of 180 tractors signals the government’s strong commitment to boosting food production and supporting farmers nationwide.
