The State House has announced that President Adama Barrow on Wednesday received Leonardo Santos Simão, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, at the State House in Banjul. Their meeting focused on the government’s ongoing efforts to adopt a new constitution for The Gambia.

According to the statement, Mr. Simão encouraged the government to continue engaging in inclusive dialogue and consultations with political parties, civil society organisations, and the international community in order to build consensus on the draft constitution.

President Barrow, in response, noted that his administration had reviewed the 2020 Draft Constitution and developed a revised 2024 version incorporating those assessments. He emphasized that the government remains open to discussions with stakeholders who may have specific concerns about the new draft.

The discussions underscored President Barrow’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign pledge of delivering a new constitution that upholds the principles of stability and the rule of law. The meeting also touched on broader regional issues, including economic development, social challenges, and peace and security across West Africa.
