President Barrow Says BCC Doesn’t ‘Sweep’ Banjul

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow says the Banjul City Council (BCC) doesn’t ‘sweep’ Banjul, saying even commercial areas are left out by the Council.

“I will give you an example, I go out on Sundays. Even around the market, which is a commercial area, they don’t sweep it. Should it be like that? And their primary responsibility is sweeping because people are paying their taxes and their taxes should go back to them (60 percent). The first priority should be, Banjul should be cleaned every day, but they don’t sweep it. If it was an NPP mayor, I would have called her to my office here, but if she’s not an NPP mayor, if I called her, she can come and go out and exposed me. What can I do if she politicized it? Nothing. They said they are independent, but how much independent you are, you should work in partnership,” president Adama Barrow told Star TV on Friday.

President Barrow says he is interested in winning all the seats, saying in that way it will make his work easy;

“I want all the seats because they are all very important for me. Because if I have all the seats, it will make my work very easy. If you have a mayor that you are in the same party with, all of you are in the right. Everything will work. But if you have a mayor who is on the left, and you are right, you will clash at the traffic light. That’s why we want all the seats so that all of them will work with the Central Government and listen to the Central Government. We don’t want local governments to build resistance, and politicized the work,” he said.
