Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia’s Queen Scorpions have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers following a disappointing double-header defeat to Kenya’s Harambe Starlets.

The Scorpions suffered a crushing 3-1 loss in the first leg before falling 1-0 in the decisive second leg at Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal. The 4-1 aggregate defeat ended their hopes of reaching the continental showpiece scheduled for Morocco next year.

Kenya’s victory secured their place in WAFCON 2026, while the Queen Scorpions’ campaign came to a premature end.

Prior to the crucial second leg, the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) had rallied the nation, urging all Gambians to throw their weight behind the women’s senior national team as they sought to overturn the first-leg deficit.

Head coach Mariama Sowe responded to the heavy first-leg defeat by making significant changes to her starting eleven, introducing seven new faces in an attempt to bolster both defensive solidity and attacking threat. However, the tactical reshuffle proved insufficient as Kenya once again proved too strong for the Gambian side.

The elimination marks another setback for women’s football in The Gambia as the Queen Scorpions continue their search for a maiden WAFCON appearance.
