Africa-Press – Gambia. Alhagie Babou Ceesay, the National Assembly Member (NAM) for Sabach Sanjal, has strongly condemned the GALA protest, branding it as unlawful. Speaking at an extraordinary session of the National Assembly—held to discuss the formation of a committee tasked with investigating the sale of former President Jammeh’s assets—Ceesay cautioned youth against being misled by what he described as impostors claiming to represent their interests.
He referenced Section 5 of the Constitution, which stipulates that any unconstitutional actions should be addressed through the courts, not through illegal street protests.
“Section 5 says if somebody or even the National Assembly does anything which contradicts the Constitution and denies you your constitutional mandate, what you should have done is to go to the courts. But not to forcefully go to the streets. Is illegal. And I’m condemning you. I’m not encouraging you to do this next time. I’m a youth like you. And there were others who were not even youths. I saw them there. These are pretenders. They are politicians,” Ceesay declared.
He further expressed gratitude for the country’s newfound democracy, albeit with a critical view of some of the protesters, whom he disparaged as “cockroaches and mice” for what he called their unlawful actions.
“We are very happy that now we have democracy in this country. Now that the cockroaches and mice are all going to the streets illegally,” He Said.Hon. Ceesay also drew a stark comparison between some young people and high-level officials accused of corruption. “Some of the youths are more honorable than a CEO who is accused of looting millions in this country.” he said.
In concluding his remarks, he called on the National Assembly to empower the investigative committee with the authority to compel appearances, including the ability to direct the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest any individuals who refuse to cooperate.
“So, Honourable Speaker, we should also give the committee the mandate to direct the IGP to arrest anyone who fails to report to the committee because there may be resistance, and they may be facing certain resistance,” he asserted.
