Africa-Press – Gambia. Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and National People’s Party (NPP) Deputy Spokesperson, Seedy S.K. Njie, has expressed confidence that the majority of Gambians living abroad would vote for the NPP if given the opportunity.
Responding to a question from host Peter Gomez regarding claims that the NPP fears diaspora voting, Njie dismissed the suggestion, asserting that the majority of overseas Gambians would back the NPP in an election.
“If you are to get the total number of Gambians abroad and to vote, about nothing less than the absolute majority of them will cast in for the National People’s Party,” Njie said.
He argued that there is a widespread misconception about the composition of the diaspora, noting that it includes Gambians residing in countries such as Senegal, Guinea, Angola, Mauritania, Gabon, and the United States.
Njie also raised questions about the logistical and legal framework required to enable diaspora voting under the current electoral system. “How do we do that? How do we demarcate the diaspora? How do you put them in a constituency as required by the current 1997 constituency?” he asked.
Reaffirming his party’s stance, Njie stressed that the NPP has never opposed, and will never oppose, the right of any Gambian—including those living abroad—to register, vote, and contest in elections or referendums. Stressing, “We have never, and we will never, go against the right of each and every Gambian to acquire a voter’s card and vote or be voted in an election or a referendum, including those in the diaspora.”
