Africa-Press – Gambia. Spain has joined The Gambia’s Cinekambia International Film Festival for the first time as the event opened its sixth edition at the University of The Gambia (UTG) in Kanifing.
The five-day festival, organised under the theme “Authentic African Storytelling Through Film and Cinema,” seeks to expose students, filmmakers, and diplomats to diverse cultural perspectives through cinema.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Friday, Spain’s Chargé d’Affaires in Banjul, Violeta Insa, said the country’s participation forms part of the cultural initiative “Gambia E Scena,” which highlights flamenco as a major Spanish art form. She described Spain’s debut as “the opening of a cultural bridge” that will enhance bilateral cooperation in the arts.
Dean of the UTG School of Journalism and Digital Media, Prof. Melchizedek Onobe, said the festival aims not only to screen films but also to strengthen identity and cultural expression. “Our stories are ours to tell,” he said.
Festival founder, filmmaker Prince Bubacarr Aminatta Sankanu, said Cinekambia continues to expand its international partnerships after Germany’s participation last year. He urged students and young filmmakers to take advantage of the exposure provided by foreign collaborations.
Running from 5–7 and 12–13 December, the festival has grown into a major cultural platform, drawing more than 700 university students and promoting intercultural dialogue and artistic exchange.
