Africa-Press – Gambia. The victims of Sukuta-Salagi demolition exercise have planned to stage a peaceful protest on Saturday, 17th May, 2025, to show discontent over the state’s handling of their lands.

The discussions for a planned protest were held last Sunday at Sukuta-Salagi when the Ward Councillor, Abdou K Cham visited the families affected by the demolition.

Meanwhile, Councillor Cham described government’s action in the area as “deliberate,” stating that the affected individuals were not given any prior notice before the demolition of their structures.

He accused the government of not acting within the provisions of Gambian law, adding that the government is only bent on provoking violence.

“We are calling on everyone to come out on Saturday for us to stage a peaceful protest. This is my mission here. I am urging all Alkalolu, youth groups, natives of Kombo to join hands with the victims. This manner of demolition is deliberately done by the government,” he said.

“We have observed that demolition is selectively done. Any structure built by physical planning personnel or their relatives were avoided,” he added.

Mr Cham pointed out that they would go ahead with the peaceful procession next Saturday. “We don’t need any permit for it because our mission is not based on causing violence or fight, but to show our discontent over government’s handling of our lands,” he noted.

Amie Sanneh, a victim disclosed that her storey building was demolished without prior notice, arguing that the authorities unfairly treated her. Seedou Jarra another victim also expressed disappointment with the authorities in the manner of the demolition exercise.
