Africa-Press – Gambia. In 2016, many brave Gambians stood up against the dictatorship of Yahya Jammeh, taking a firm stand for the liberation of our nation. People who were once afraid found the courage to unite under a common goal of defeating a regime that oppressed us for 22 years. The election of Adama Barrow was a beacon of hope, promising a new beginning and a progressive trajectory away from the oppressive rule of Jammeh. Unimaginably, the reality has been a deeply disappointing departure from what seems a new dawn of our republic.

President Barrow, who once always sang in 2016 campaign that, Ousainou Darboe has tirelessly fought against Jammeh, dedicating his life, wealth, and career for our freedom, a testimony he has now gave blind eye to, trying to repaint a characterisation he was delivered to the Gambians. President Adama Barrow has chosen to embrace the very system that were once symbols of oppression. Rather than dismantling Jammeh’s draconian laws, and weaponised security, Barrow’s governance echoes the same authoritative principles, undermining the sacrifices made by countless Gambians from 1996 to 2016.

Reflecting on 2016, Adama Barrow pretended to be a legitimate candidate who would restore democracy and prioritize reforms. Yet, those hopes seem deeply betrayed, highlighting that the vulture proverb is nothing but a mockery to the reliable communities of Gambians at home and in the diaspora. Equally, the vulture remark is a confirmation of the scramble for our wealth be the so-called prominent political figures who ran away from him and rejected his candidacy during the 2016 coalition campaign. Those who died and sacrifice in the struggle now feel disillusioned and now described as enemies. Thus, a political vulture description best suit president Barrow and his new state captured group who intend to block Gambians from removing barrow because it explains how the political hyenas doesn’t want any good for the country but only for themselves.

What President Barrow should do by now is to restore faith in his leadership by aligning with the values of the 2016 coalition. Changes must be made to abolish the oppressive systems he chose to maintain, ones that echo Jammeh’s era. Introduce accountability and return to the journey of real democratic reforms. Gambians deserve leadership that honors their sacrifices, one that genuinely steers clear from the vultures of political betrayal.
