Africa-Press – Gambia. Hon. Yahya Sanyang, Member of the National Assembly representing Latrikunda, has issued a strong call for political change, urging Gambians to vote President Adama Barrow out of office in the upcoming 2026 elections. The call comes amid growing concerns over what Sanyang describes as a troubling lack of awareness on the part of the president regarding key governmental operations.
In a recent statement, Hon. Sanyang referenced President Barrow’s national address about the recovery of assets allegedly looted by former President Yahya Jammeh. In that address, Barrow admitted to being unaware of certain actions taken by his administration—an admission Sanyang argues reflects broader issues of governance and leadership.
“President Barrow’s recent admission, in his national address regarding Yahya Jammeh’s looted assets, that he lacks awareness of certain government activities means he is not fit to lead a nation. This revelation, in my opinion, means there is no transparency, accountability, and overall effectiveness in his administration, and by extension, a lack of respect from the government workforce. When a president is uninformed about the inner workings of his government, the potential consequences can be severe and far-reaching. President Barrow doesn’t deserve to rule The Gambia because he is uninformed and not in control due to his perceived lack of awareness of what is happening in his government,” hon. Yahya Sanyang said.
According to the MP, Barrow’s acknowledgment not only erodes public trust but also threatens institutional efficiency and the government’s ability to function cohesively. Sanyang claimed the president’s detachment from internal affairs creates opportunities for mismanagement and corruption to flourish unchecked.
“If a president is not aware of what happens in his government, he will make decisions based on incomplete or inaccurate information, leading to policy inconsistencies with fatal consequences. What is, in fact, more worrying is that his lack of awareness creates a vacuum of oversight, allowing corruption, mismanagement, and abuse of power to flourish unchecked. I am not surprised President Barrow said he is not well-informed. I have seen that pattern among the ministers when they appear before the National Assembly,” he said.
Sanyang further criticized the executive branch for what he termed “visible bureaucratic inefficiencies” and an ambiguous chain of command, which he believes are symptoms of deeper systemic issues.
“Our vulnerabilities in national security are a result of the president’s unawareness, as critical information about national security matters is overlooked and mishandled. The most important question on the lips of each Gambian is this: A president who admitted he is not well-informed of governmental activities, how can he hold government officials accountable for their actions? Finally, a president’s lack of awareness about the inner workings of his government can have devastating consequences, undermining public trust, hindering administrative efficiency, and jeopardizing economic and social stability. The only solution available to Gambians is to vote Barrow out of office in the 2026 presidential elections,” he concluded.
