Africa-Press – Gambia. Gambian philanthropist Modou Turo Darboe has stepped up his support to rural communities by inaugurating six new boreholes aimed at improving access to clean drinking water for needy families.
Over the weekend, Darboe, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Vision Development Foundation (VDF), commissioned a new borehole in Bujiga, Foni the home village of former President Yahya Jammeh’s late mother, Ashobi Bojang. The borehole, named in her honour, is part of a wider initiative to tackle water challenges in underserved areas.
The project brings the total number of new boreholes funded by Darboe this year to six. Other boreholes have already been completed in the Jarra District of the Lower River Region, Sare Batch village in Lower Fulladou West, Central River Region, and Talokoto village.
Speaking at the Bujiga ceremony, VDF’s Director of Public Relations and Operations, Saihou Fofana, praised Darboe’s continued commitment to helping the country’s most vulnerable. He said the boreholes form part of VDF’s wider mission to complement government efforts to lift rural communities out of poverty.
Mr. Fofana highlighted other interventions funded by Darboe, including milling machines, hospital beds, a tricycle, and a new feeder road in Jarra worth over D3.9 million. He added that VDF also plans to install streetlights and expand access to social services in rural villages.
As part of on-going activities, Darboe also donated D40,000 to the Sare Nfally mosque committee, D65,000 for a youth football tournament, and D50,000 to the Sare Nfally Women’s Association.
Residents in Bujiga and Sare Batch welcomed the boreholes, describing the lack of clean water as one of their biggest daily struggles. They pledged to maintain the new facilities and expressed gratitude for Darboe’s continued support.
In his remarks, Darboe renewed his promise to bring more development to rural areas. He called on Gambians to promote unity and reject tribalism, reminding all that true national progress can only be achieved when people stand together as “One People, One Nation, One Gambia.”
