Two Gov’T Officers Deny Calling Alleged PIU Shooter “Casamance Rebel”

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Momodou Sowe and National Security Adviser, Abubakarr Suleiman Jeng on Tuesday both denied calling Ousainou Bojang a “rebel from Casamance.”

They made the denial while appearing before the Banjul High Court where the case of alleged PIU Shooter resumed. It could be recalled that Ousainou Bojang was accused of killing two paramilitary officers and injuring the third and the case became known as PIU Shooter.

Testifying before Justice Ebrima Jaiteh, the Deputy IGP [pw7], Sowe adduced that he did not give any information to the Government Spokesperson, Ebrima G. Sankareh at the time of the police Investigation.

Deputy IGP Sowe claimed that he did not see the gun that was allegedly used by the prime suspect, Bojang at the time of the investigation of the police shooting that occurred at Sukuta-Jabang Traffic Light on 12 September 2023.

He deduced that at the time of the joint investigation of the alleged police shooting, he did not see a female suspect.

However, the seventh defense witness, Sowe was quick to say as the acting Inspector General of Police, the National Security Adviser Jeng , approved the press briefing he had on 15 September 2023.

At that point, the Director of Public Prosecution, A.M. Yusuf objected to a question, but his objection was overruled and the question of defense counsel Adama Sillah was sustained.

When asked by defense counsel Sillah to tell the court the protocol police followed before calling a press briefing, DPP Yusuf argued that the question raised by defense counsel Sillah was irrelevant to the case.

At that point, the presiding Judge sustained the objection raised by DPP Yusuf, ordering defense counsel Sillah to rephrase his question.

Meanwhile, going further after when the eight defense witness, National Security Adviser, Abubakarr Suleiman Jeng was asked to ascertain if he could recall calling the first accused Bojang, “a rebel”, he replied by stating that if such was said by him, it was based on intelligence.

Reacting to the response of the witness, defense counsel Lamin J. Darboe for the first accused, Ousainou Bojang applied to have the footage of the press briefing dated 15 September 2023 to be played and the same was done.

As the sitting got beyond 4:00pm, the trial Judge ordered the matter to be adjourned.

Meanwhile, Justice Jaiteh, thanked the Deputy General Manager of QTV, Lasana Tunkara and representatives of Fatou Network and Kerr Fatou for obeying court orders, describing their appearance in court as national duty for the course of justice. Justice Jaiteh called on the police to respect the court order.
