Africa-Press – Gambia. The United Democratic Party (UDP) has suffered a major shake-up with the resignations of two prominent figures, Tombong Saidy, Administrative Secretary for Media and Communication, and Baboucarr Jammeh, popularly known as “Loppy,” the party’s Deputy National Campaign Manager. Both men tendered their letters on Thursday, September 11, 2025, copies of which were also shared.
In his resignation letter, Saidy expressed gratitude for the trust and responsibilities he had been given throughout his service. Over the years, he held several influential positions, including Administrative Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Member of the Fundraising Committee, Administrative Secretary for Media and Communication, Chairman of the Media and Communication Committee, and Member of the Campaign and Organising Committee.
Saidy emphasized that his decision was rooted in a conviction that Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda embodies the leadership qualities necessary to steer both the UDP and The Gambia towards a brighter future. He lamented, however, that the current direction of the party does not align with this vision.
“I cannot, in good conscience, continue my membership when the potential of a leader like Mr. Bensouda is not being recognized and embraced as the best path forward,” he wrote.
Similarly, Baboucarr Jammeh, a founding member of the UDP who has been with the party since 1996, described his resignation as a painful but necessary choice. In his letter, Jammeh recounted nearly three decades of loyalty and sacrifice but said recent developments had left him with no option but to step down.
Jammeh accused the party of marginalizing and insulting Bensouda and other progressive voices, warning that such actions undermined the very principles of fairness and respect upon which the UDP was founded.
“I cannot in good faith continue to serve in a party environment where those who bring new ideas and genuine commitment to national renewal are vilified rather than supported,” Jammeh stated.
Both Saidy and Jammeh pledged their continued commitment to the Gambian people and expressed optimism about working with others who share Bensouda’s vision of building a just, inclusive, and prosperous nation.
The resignations come amid mounting speculation about internal divisions within the UDP as the 2026 elections draw closer.
