Africa-Press – Gambia. Ousainu Darboe, leader of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), has strongly condemned President Adama Barrow’s bid for a third term, asserting that Gambians will not allow any leader to serve beyond two-five-year-terms.
Addressing supporters in Essau during the UDP’s nationwide tour, Darboe accused President Barrow of failing to fulfill key promises made to the Gambian people, particularly his pledge not to exceed two presidential terms. He emphasized that Gambians must hold the president accountable.
“Barrow and his government have failed to deliver on the promises made since 2016. But one commitment that Gambians will ensure is the promise of not extending a ‘third term’ in office. That will not happen in this country,” Darboe said.
The opposition leader recalled that President Barrow made this pledge before assuming office as Gambia’s third president, during a meeting at TAF Gardens Residence in Brufut. “He assured Gambians that no president would govern this country for more than ten years. This was his promise to the people on that day,” Darboe noted, warning that if the president ignores this pledge, the UDP will take action to ensure it is respected.
Darboe described 2026 as a pivotal year for upholding the two-term limit, stressing the importance of voter registration. He called on all eligible Gambians to obtain voter cards and vote President Barrow out of office, accusing his administration of disregarding its commitments to citizens.
