Africa-Press – Gambia. Ousainou Darboe, Secretary General of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has called on party members to avoid divisive rhetoric following Talib Ahmed Bensouda’s withdrawal from the party’s flag bearer race for the 2026 presidential election.
Bensouda, the current Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council, announced his withdrawal in a move that has sparked significant debate and political concern within the party over the weekend.
In a video message, Darboe confirmed that Bensouda had informed him of his decision with “respect and obedience.” “What he told me, I hold it with good faith. I respect and agree with his decision, even though I am not happy, especially after considering the critical stage of the party,” Darboe stated.
The veteran politician cautioned party members against reacting with anger. “Talib’s withdrawal should not pain anyone. You can be sad, but avoid anger. I know in the current political system, people overreact to issues. I want to call on all UDP militants to avoid offensive words. Let the respect and discipline continue between you and Talib,” he urged.
Darboe emphasized that the position of flag bearer belongs to the party and that Bensouda’s decision to step away should be respected. “He applied for the position and got it, but if he decides to leave the position, that shouldn’t be a problem for anyone, and everyone should respect that decision,” he added.
He went on to remind party members of Bensouda’s past contributions. “I don’t want anyone to attack or blame him. Remember that yesterday and today, he sacrificed for you and the party. You are now standing here attacking or using abusive language against him,” Darboe warned.
He also clarified that Bensouda had withdrawn from the flag bearer race, not from the party itself. “You cannot be at the same party with someone and also throw offensive words at him. Even if he resigns from the party, know that you and another person joined together to approve that honourable position. I want everyone to know that we are all one family. Whatever happens tomorrow, let us still be one family,” he concluded.
