UDP Leader Ousainu Darboe Raises Concerns over Voter Registration

Africa-Press – Gambia. The leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), ANM Ousainu Darboe, issued a pointed warning to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Monday, voicing concerns about the integrity of the upcoming voter registration process. Speaking at his party office in Pipeline, Darboe emphasized that the UDP would closely monitor the exercise to prevent irregularities.

“We will be very mindful of IEC,” Darboe said. “If all the votes are being written down, what they will publish on social media will all be photographed. We will take a picture of everything when it is posted.”

He announced that the party would deploy youth members to oversee the display of voter registration data, checking names, dates of registration, and times to ensure accuracy.

Darboe urged the IEC to conduct the process transparently and fairly. “Those who need to be registered legitimately, make sure you register them legitimately. And do not register those who should not be registered legitimately,” he said, underscoring the party’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the voter list.

In addition to addressing voter registration, Darboe dismissed claims that the UDP primarily represents the Mandinka ethnic group, calling such assertions “propaganda.” He highlighted the party’s diverse membership, citing figures such as Agie Yam Secka, among others, from various communities.

“Party Mandinka does not exist,” he said. “Only Party Gambia exists here.”

Darboe concluded by framing the party’s efforts as a fight for future generations. “We are not doing it for ourselves; our children’s and our grandchildren’s are the ones we are fighting for to shape their future,” he said.
