Africa-Press – Gambia. The United Democratic Party’s (UDP) selection committee has been advised to carefully consider the opinions of the majority of Gambians, including those who are not party supporters, when choosing the party’s flagbearer.
Sulayman Dampha, the Public Relations Officer for the UDP’s Bundung Constituency, told The Voice newspaper in an interview that the party’s chance of winning the 2026 presidential election depends on presenting the right candidate to the public.
“Our selection committee must listen to the voices of Gambians, especially the youth, because they represent the country’s largest voter population,” Dampha stated.
He emphasized that the committee must pay attention to what Gambians are discussing in public spaces like football fields, markets, and social gatherings to select an electable candidate. He added that addressing the concerns of youth is critical to securing the presidency.
Mr. Dampha also called on all UDP militants to remain united and focus on promoting the party’s agenda to voters while advising against trying to impose a specific candidate on the public, and also that members should avoid making threats about withholding their vote if their preferred candidate is not selected.
According to Dampha, many Gambians are looking up to the UDP to “salvage the country.” He suggested that the party could initiate dialogue with other political parties, similar to what was done in 2016.
Describing the UDP as the “country’s saviour,” Dampha urged all Gambians to rally behind the party. He stressed that the UDP is at a crucial stage that requires a unified effort to foster cohesiveness among its members.
