Africa-Press – Gambia. Hon. Habib Ceesay, Second Vice President of the United Democratic Party (UDP) National Youth Wing, and Councilor for Jeshwang ward at the Kanifing Municipal Council has announced his resignation from both the party’s national executive and the UDP, effective immediately.
In a resignation letter addressed to Hon. Alhagie S. Darboe, Mr. Ceesay described the UDP as more than just a political organization, calling it a “family legacy” rooted in his parents’ early support for the party. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities the UDP afforded him, noting his political growth from the ward level to the national executive.
“The UDP has shaped my political life and given me opportunities to learn, serve, and connect with people across this nation. For that, I will forever remain grateful,” Ceesay stated.
Explaining the reasons behind his decision, Ceesay cited deep reflection on his political future and a desire to align his path with democratic principles. He emphasized the importance of term limits, arguing that political parties should uphold the same democratic values they demand of governments.
“If we as a party expect the ruling government to serve only two terms, then we must practice this principle ourselves and prepare to do the same when entrusted with power,” he wrote.
Ceesay stressed that his departure was not an act of rejection but rather a conscious step toward exploring new directions that reflect his democratic convictions and future national aspirations.
He extended appreciation to his colleagues in the UDP Youth Wing and across the party, highlighting the solidarity, challenges, and achievements they shared together.
“I leave with no bitterness, only respect, fond memories, and best wishes for the UDP’s continued success. May The Gambia’s progress always remain above all else,” he concluded.
The UDP leadership has yet to issue an official response to Ceesay’s resignation.
