UMC Dismisses Claims of Rejected Registration

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Unite Movement for Change (UMC) on Wednesday rejected reports suggesting that its application for registration had been denied by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), describing the claims as “false and misleading.”

In a statement issued by the movement’s spokesperson, Kemo Bojang, and posted on his official Facebook page, UMC said it had not received any formal communication from the IEC regarding the status of its application.

“Contrary to the false and misleading information being deliberately peddled by some adversaries, which is nothing but a ploy to distract Gambians from the well-received New Year’s speech by Mayor Bensouda on behalf of UNITE, a speech that touched all aspects of Gambian life and the challenges of our nation and its people,” Bojang said in a statement.

Bojang stated that UMC remains officially uninformed of any decision by the electoral body. “We wish to state categorically that we have not received any official communication whatsoever from the Independent Electoral Commission regarding the status of our application,” he said.

The statement further clarified the role of the IEC in the party registration process, noting that the commission facilitates and guides applicants to ensure compliance with constitutional and legal requirements, rather than rejecting applications outright.

“The commission’s role is to guide applicants through the process and ensure that all constitutional and legal requirements are fully met before registration is completed,” Bojang explained.

According to the movement, its registration process is progressing smoothly, and the public was urged to disregard unverified information circulating on social media and other platforms.

“As such, any claims suggesting that our application has been rejected are not only inaccurate but also a clear attempt to misinform the public and undermine confidence in the process,” Bojang emphasized.

UMC reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the IEC and complying fully with all stipulated requirements until the registration process is lawfully concluded.

“We remain fully engaged with the IEC and committed to complying with all stipulated requirements until the registration process is duly and lawfully concluded,” it ends.
