Africa-Press – Gambia. The UNITE Movement for Change (UMC) has announced plans to provide free eye examinations and prescription glasses to 350 residents in Jarra Soma and Farafenni as part of a community health outreach scheduled for this weekend.

According to a press statement from the movement, the initiative will benefit 175 people in each location. The outreach will begin on Saturday, 20 December 2025, at Moses Lodge in Jarra Soma in the Lower River Region, and continue on Sunday, 21 December 2025, at the UMC Farafenni Bureau opposite Ecobank and the Farafenni Community Centre in the North Bank Region.

Services will run from 9:00am to 5:00pm on both days. Qualified eye care professionals are expected to conduct comprehensive eye examinations, while free prescription glasses will be issued on site to beneficiaries assessed to be in need.

UMC said the outreach is aimed at addressing vision challenges that often go untreated due to financial constraints, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities. The movement noted that access to eye care plays a critical role in education, employment, road safety and overall quality of life.

Residents experiencing vision difficulties have been encouraged to attend early, as services will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

UMC adds that the programme forms part of its broader community-focused engagements intended to support basic health needs and promote inclusion. The movement said it remains committed to initiatives that directly impact lives at grassroots level across the country.
