Africa-Press – Gambia. The release of several youths from Mile 2 Central Prison on bail was met with scenes of jubilation, as the detainees rejoined their peers and defiantly chanted slogans such as “We must never relent! Revolution has begun! I will die for The Gambia.”

Their chants echoed through the streets as they proceeded to the seaside for a ritual cleansing bath—a practice believed to wash away negative spiritual influences and misfortune associated with incarceration before reintegrating into society.

The detainees were granted bail following an application by their legal counsel to advance their hearing date from September 4 to August 27, 2025.

The High Court granted bail under the following terms:

1. Each of the accused persons is granted bail in the sum of D50,000.00 (fifty thousand dalasi) or with one Gambian surety in the like sum.

2. The sureties are to each swear to an affidavit of means in the above sum and also deposit their valid Gambian Biometric Passport or a valid ID card with the registrar of the court pending the trial.

3. Considering the charge, and as a safeguard to maintaining sanity pending the hearing and determination of this case, the accused persons are ordered to enter into a self-recognizance to keep the peace and be of good behavior pending the hearing and determination of this case; failure to abide by which shall lead to the revocation of their bail.

The youths were arrested following a protest on August 22, 2025, outside the headquarters of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA). Demonstrators gathered to oppose PURA’s recent decision to impose a data price floor of D50 per gigabyte on GSM operators.

The measure, aimed at standardizing data tariffs, sparked widespread discontent among young people who argued that the increase was unaffordable and would further restrict access to the internet.

Their detention had generated significant public attention, with many viewing their release as a symbolic moment of resilience and defiance.
