Africa-Press – Gambia. Scores of vendors and businessmen in Serrekunda and Coastal Road Markets have complained over the skyrocketing of prices of goods and food stuffs.
The vendors have spoken out during an interview with the Voice Newpaper which went out and about in market areas in Serre Kunda and Coastal Road.
Malick Ceesay, a vendor at Coastal Road says the over pricing of goods is becoming unbearable to him and his colleagues.
According to him, the Gambia needs strict regulations of prices of goods to put the business sector in order. “Everything in this country is expensive ranging from basic commodities, clothes and even drivers do keep on adding transport fares on no basis. This is affecting a lot of petty businessmen,” he said.
He called on the government to intervene as soon as possible saying they have been crying out over the matter for many years with little action from authorities.
Sulayman Dampha, PRO of Serre kunda Market for his part, also discussed the continuous price hike in the country. “We cannot buy goods at such high prices and sell it cheaply. How are we going to survive as businessmen with so much dependence,” he questioned.
Dampha discloses that a lot of goods are in the market but customers complained over lack of money. “This is serious and needs urgent solution. Everyone is complaining about the hardship of the country,” he remarked. He called on Gambians to vote wisely in the December 2026 elections as the elections will determine the future of the next generation.
Ousman Sanneh, another businessman also suggested that government should set strategies towards regulating the business sector.
“We are suffering. We don’t make profit and that is causing economic losses to us. A lot of people are going through the same stress daily,” he said. “As a vendor I appeal to the government to help us find solutions to these problems,” he added.
