Africa-Press – Gambia. Hon. Yahya Menteng Sanyang, a leading figure in the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), is calling on members of his movement to redouble their efforts as the country heads into a decisive election season.
In a message posted on Facebook, Sanyang cautioned supporters against complacency, saying the coming months will require greater discipline and energy from the movement’s base. “Every UMC member needs to step up, do more, and shake off any complacency,” he wrote.
His remarks come as the UMC positions itself as a rising force in national politics, a shift Sanyang suggests has begun to unsettle the governing National People’s Party (NPP). He cited a reported comment by President Adama Barrow during a recent visit to Mankamankunda, in which the president allegedly dismissed the United Democratic Party (UDP) and its leader, Ousainou Darboe, as electoral threats. Sanyang argued that the NPP’s focus has since shifted, with some party members now viewing the UMC as a formidable challenger.
“We have a real threat from Talib and everyone must start working hard right now,” Sanyang said, alluding to what he described as a growing sense within the NPP that the race may be closer than previously assumed.
With less than three months since its establishment, Sanyang acknowledged that the UMC remains a relatively new political force but expressed confidence in its prospects. “We have less than three months and are just getting established,” he wrote. “We are going to win, and we are going to win big.”
The movement’s sharpened rhetoric and increasing visibility have fueled speculation about whether it can translate momentum into electoral gains. As the campaign season accelerates, the contest for political influence—particularly for the presidency is poised to intensify.
