Africa-Press – Gambia. Chairman Yankuba Darboe of the Brikama Area Council has sharply responded to President Adama Barrow’s recent remarks referring to opposition parties as his “apprentices,” declaring that the United Democratic Party (UDP) is “nobody’s apprentice” but rather “President Barrow’s master.”
Speaking to journalists at the Banjul International Airport during the welcome reception for UDP leader Ousainu Darboe upon his return from a European tour, Chairman Darboe took issue with President Barrow’s comments.
“President Barrow said the opposition are his apprentices; that is why the numbers are good today. We want to show him that we are his masters,” Chairman Darboe stated.
He further argued that the UDP played a foundational role in President Barrow’s political rise, asserting that it is illogical for a mentor to become a student.
“Who you have taught can never be your master. Where have you ever heard such a thing?” he asked rhetorically. “We are the drivers and the masters. The National People’s Party (NPP) cannot do what we have done because they are our apprentices—and they should accept that.”
Chairman Darboe also used the occasion to claim that past elections in The Gambia were manipulated, stressing that the UDP had been the rightful winner in previous contests.
He vowed that in the upcoming 2026 elections, the UDP will not allow electoral malpractice to go unchallenged.
“In 2026, we will apprehend those who try to steal elections. This time, the will of the people will prevail—and we will win,” he declared.
