Yaya Mengteng Sanyang Advocates Term Limits for Party Leaders

Africa-Press – Gambia. Hon. Yaya Mengteng Sanyang, a senior official of the Unite Movement for Change, has called for sweeping political reforms, urging Gambian parties—and the nation at large—to adopt strict, legally binding term limits for party flag bearers.

In a statement published on his official Facebook page, Mr. Sanyang said the reforms should begin within individual party constitutions and ultimately be codified in the country’s supreme law. The goal, he said, is to curb entrenched leadership and encourage greater political accountability.

“Our first action should be to implement strict, non-negotiable term limits for flag bearers within our respective party constitutions, followed by an amendment to the National Constitution,” he wrote. Such measures, he argued, would help “prevent the entrenchment of power” and ensure a regular infusion of new leadership.

Mr. Sanyang pointed to his own party’s internal rules as an example of the kind of governance he hopes to see nationwide. “In the Unite Movement for Change, there is a strict, non-negotiable term limit for our flag bearers,” he said, urging Gambians dissatisfied with the status quo to consider the UMC as a political alternative.

His remarks were explicitly framed around the approach of the 2026 presidential election, in which President Adama Barrow is widely expected to seek a third term. “We urge you to leave political parties without term limits for flag bearers and join us to ensure that Adama Barrow is denied a third term at the polls in 2026,” he said.

The intervention comes amid renewed debate over constitutional reforms in The Gambia, where civil society groups and opposition parties have increasingly pressed for term limits and stronger democratic safeguards. Mr. Sanyang’s comments underscore the UMC’s effort to position itself at the forefront of that movement as the country heads into a pivotal election cycle.
