UDP National Youth Wing presents 2019-2020 report

National youth wing of the United Democratic Party (UDP) recently held its second national congress, where the national youth president presented the activity report of the youth wing 2019/2020.

The event, which drew thousands of youths across all regions, was held at the provincial town of Farafenni.

Presenting the activity report, Sulayman Saho, president of the UDP national youth wing informed that the current executive of the youth wing were elected on the 9th December 2018 at the party’s national congress held at Pencha Mi Hall.

Saho disclosed that the youth wing’s first activity after the national congress was a three-day sensitization and familiarisation tour, which took executive members to the party’s regional structures such as Mansakonko and Basse.

The youth wing, he added, was tasked with organising and conducting the national youth congress whichhe added, was successfully held in Gunjur in collaboration with the Kombo South and West Coast Region executives.

“On that day, the youth wing held its first rally which drew thousands of people and also a group of defectors from the APRC party.”

According to him, the young wing secretary general accompanied by the deputy leader also participated in events marking the Chinese New Year celebrations, where the party held fruitful side discussions with the then Chinese ambassador to The Gambia on ways of cementing the bilateral ties between the Chinese government and the party.

Mr Saho recalled that on the 10th March 2019, executive members of the youth wing namely, Kemo Bojang, the secretary general and Michelle Mendy, female regional leader from the North Bank Region left The Gambia for China where they attended the China political university and participated in the Africa China youth political party programme.

“In July 2019, the Secretary General Kemo Bojang was selected for the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship, where he spent three months in the United States and built working relationships with the youth wing of SWAPO party in Namibia, APC in Nigeria, Pastef in Senegal, ANC of South Africa and many more” he added.

He added that in September the youth wing of the United Democratic Party in KMC organised a cleaning exercise to commemorate World Peace Day, which was in accordance with the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“The United Democratic Party youth wing was the first party to roll out COVID 19 response by supplying hand washing points around the country. The youth wing also took videos and hired a sign language interpreter to help in sending a more inclusive message to all sections of society.” Saho noted.

In the same vein, the youth wing also launched the national mask campaign aimed at providing masks to all Gambians which he said, were distributed to all regional coordinators for onward distribution to their various communities.
