Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr James Enu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West, has expressed deep concern over the growing level of filth and poor sanitation practices in his constituency.
Mr Enu was speaking during a cleanup exercise held over the weekend at Tema Community Two-BBC to rid the area of refuse and to raise awareness about the need to keep the environment clean.
The exercise, which was organised in partnership with the BuzzStop Boys, a youth-led sanitation volunteer group, and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), saw dozens of participants come together to desilt gutters, sweep streets, and clear waste from major parts of the community.
The MP, who actively took part in the activity, joined the youth and other volunteers to clean key areas in the constituency, after which he expressed worry about the increasing disregard for environmental cleanliness by residents.
He pointed out that several homes and shops had been constructed on drainage systems, making it difficult for rainwater to flow freely, contributing to flooding in certain parts of Tema West during heavy rains.
He stated, “When it rains here, some people cannot sleep in their rooms; some people have to go elsewhere to sleep. When it rains at night, it’s a big problem, and this is asa result of indiscipline on the part of the people and some companies.”
“There’s a challenge in the area where people build on sewage, gutters; others have blocked the gutters with sand, mounted their containers and are selling; some companies have filled the gutters with concrete, preventing the free flow of rainwater,” he further said.
Mr Enu noted that poor sanitation remained one of the biggest challenges facing the constituency and encouraged young people across the country to be active participants in such civic duties.
He added that sanitation was a shared responsibility that affected everyone, assuring the constituents that more such initiatives would be rolled out in the coming months.
