Africa-Press – Ghana. The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has announced plans to convene a stakeholder dialogue on July 24 to discuss the National Agro-Industry Policy, which aims to facilitate private sector investment in agro-processing.

According to the Trade Minister, the policy seeks to create an enabling environment for private sector growth in the agricultural sector.

Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare made the announcement on Tuesday on the Floor of Parliament when she responded to an urgent question by Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, also the Minority Leader, asked the minister what progress had been made in the development of a comprehensive national agro-industry policy and how the ministry intended to ensure that the policy translated into value addition, improved market access, and export-led growth for Ghana’s agricultural sector.

“Mr. Speaker, we will convene a stakeholder dialogue on July 24 this year to discuss the policy, where timelines for implementation will be rolled out,” the minister said.

“A 60-acre land in Yeji has been earmarked for the pilot phase of commercial activities under the policy. However, other locations, including Tamale, Salaga, and Kintampo North, are also expected to benefit from the initiative as part of the government’s big push agenda,” she added.

According to Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare, also a National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Kintampo North, the government had encouraged commercial farmers to take advantage of the policy, which promises to boost private sector investment in agro-processing and promote economic growth in the agricultural sector.

The agro-industry policy seeks to modernize Ghana’s agricultural sector, improve productivity, and promote economic growth through public sector-led interventions and job creation initiatives.
