Africa-Press – Ghana. Road transport operators have suspended a planned 20 per cent increase in public transport fares, initially scheduled to take effect on Friday, August 8, 2025.

The decision followed a meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6, during which stakeholders agreed that the proposed increment lacked adequate consultation.

“Transport Operators, following the meeting, have agreed to suspend the purported 20 per cent increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision,” a statement jointly signed by Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ankrah, National Vice Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and Mr. Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), stated.

The statement reaffirmed the implementation of the existing 15 per cent reduction in public transport fares, which took effect on May 24, 2025.

“All Transport Operators are to ensure that the 15 per cent reduction is enforced,” it said.

“We count on the cooperation of all transport operators and the general public,” the statement said.

The GRTCC had earlier announced the fare hike, citing rising operational costs, including increased fuel prices and vehicle maintenance expenses.

However, mounting public concern and calls for broader stakeholder engagement prompted the reversal.
